Delighting in God’s Word - Psalm 119: 97-104
1. Introduction
• the Bible lies at the heart of Christian faith
• passage: Psalmist expresses great delight in God’s Word, v97, 103

2. Psalmist’s great delight in God’s Word
• 9 times he uses the word “delight”: v16, 24, 35, 47, 70, 77, 92, 143, 174
• also seen in the way Psalm is arranged:
176 vv divided into 22 paragraphs of 8 vv each
each paragraph is built around a Hebrew letter
whole Psalm is arranged in order of Hebrew alphabet
• CS Lewis: “It is a pattern, a thing done like embroidery, stitch by stitch,
through long quiet hours, for love of the subject and for the delight in
leisurely, disciplined craftsmanship”

3. Why this great delight?
a) Through God’s Word comes salvation
• v174: “I long for your salvation, O LORD, and your law is my delight”
• man’s greatest need?
Parable of Rich Fool, Lk 12:16f
a life that transcends this material world
• v174: salvation provided by God
eg lunch: “your friend has paid”

b) Through God’s Word comes wise counsel
• v24: “Your statutes are my delight;
they are my counselors”
• Francis Schaeffer: How then shall we live?
he was addressing a generation facing many challenges
question still pertinent today
Bible: God gives us wise counsel
eg electrical appliance and instruction handbook

c) Through God’s Word comes comfort & strength
• v143: “Trouble and distress have come upon me,
but your commands are my delight”
• Psalmists and their troubles
• through the ages, people have found comfort & encouragement in
the Psalms
• eg friend and Psalm 23

4. Summary

• if the Bible is all these, what should be our attitude?

a) We will want to study God’s Word
• v 105: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path”
• we need to read and study God’s Word for ourselves

b) We will want to share the Good News of this Book with others
• good news is always meant to be shared
• 2010 census: Christians: 18.3%, increase from 14.6% in 2000
but large sections of people have still not heard the Good News
¼ of the people here are foreigners
