Matt 7:24-28 is short parable which contrasts a certain person who builds his house on sand with another who builds on rock. It is a story that brings the ‘Sermon on the Mount’ (Mt 5-7) to a close. So it holds important spiritual lessons.

Verse to focus: "...everyone who hears these words of mine...." (vv 24, 26)

Did Jesus not frequently challenge his audience with these words: "He who has ears, let him hear..."? (Mt 11:15; 13:9; 13:43; Mk 4:9; 4:23; Lk 8:8; 14:35).

Why? Because God has much to say to us.

“To whom can I speak and give warning? Who will listen to me?

Their ears are closed so they cannot hear.

The word of the LORD is offensive to them; they find no pleasure in it.” (Jeremiah 6:10)

2. DO

Verse to focus: “and puts them into practice” (v 24)

It is not enough for us to hear these words of Jesus; to study them; to be inspired by them; to have hopes/aspirations/dreams based on them. We must ACT on them; practise them; live them in our everyday lives.

Verse to focus: “it had its foundation on the rock” (v 25) The parable shows the need for a good foundation.

Jesus is telling us that the security of our existence depends on what we do with what we believe.

1. What can we do to prepare our hearts so that we can be more effective hearers or readers of God’s Word?

2. Why is the hearing of the Word not enough?

3. How does putting the Word of God into practice ensure that our lives will be founded on the rock?
