Topic: “What are you seeking?” (John 1:38
Service: 9am (One Combined Service)
Scripture Texts: John 1:35-45
Speaker: Elder Ernest Chew
1. The Starting Point:
John the Baptist: “Look, the Lamb of God!” (1:36).
“When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus” (1:37).

2. The Searching Question Jesus Asked:
“What are you seeking?” (1:38a, ESV). “Seek” -- same word in John 20:15 and Matthew 6:33.
“What are you looking for?” (NCV). “What are you after?” (The Message).
“What do you want?” (NIV)

3. The Staying Question:
“Where are you staying?” (1:38b). Same as “abiding”, “remaining” (see John 8:31-32; 15:4-5).

4. The Seeing Invitation:
“Come and you will see” (1:39a).

5. The Spending Outcome:
“...they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him” (1:39b).

6. The Sharing Impact:
“Andrew...had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and told him, „We have found the
Messiah‟... and he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, „You are Simon son of John. You will be called
Cephas‟.” (1:40-42).
“The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, „Follow me‟.
... Philip found Nathanael …”(1:43-45).
Operation Andrew was followed by Operation Philip and Operation Nathanael!

7. A Service Cycle
(a) The Grace of Stewardship (2 Cor.8:9 and 9:8)
(b) The Love of Service (Gal.5:13)
The Cycle: L______________, O_______________, A_______________, F________________, G______________
(see John 14:15; 15:10, 5, 8).
(c) The Fellowship of Suffering (Phil.3:10-11).
"What are YOU seeking?"

1. What are you looking for in Jesus? For this year? For always?
Why did the Apostle John write his Gospel? (John 20:30-31).
2. What have you found in Jesus? Reflect on Matthew 11:25-30.
3. How are you going to share what you have discovered about Jesus? Who do you have in mind?
