“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” (Gen 2:24) This statement, repeated 3 more times in the Bible, gives us the basis for marriage as God himself planned it. The other places are Matt. 19:5, Mk 10:7 and Eph. 5:31.In the first two references Jesus uses this foundational truth to answer a question about divorce; the last reference is part of the famous teaching about Christian marriage.

I. Tying the Right Knot

Tying the right knot implies finding the right partner, but we must understand the biblical basis of marriage first, before we ask who is the right partner. Marriage has three important parts:

• Leaving:

• Uniting:

• Becoming one flesh:

II. The Art of Remaining Knotted

“Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away.” (Song of Songs 8:7)

What are some ingredients for a successful marriage?

• Love & commitment

• Love & compatibility

• Love & communication

III. Knotted to the End – growing old together

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: if one falls down, his friend can help him up.    ... A cord of three strands is not easily broken.” (Eccles. 4:9-11)

1. Do you think the biblical standard for marriage is unrealistic in today’s world? If you are unmarried will you trust God to
provide for all your needs whether it leads to marriage or not?

2. If you are a married person, what are some ways you can deepen your marriage? Will you make the decision to act on
these today?
