The message title presupposes two things: firstly, that we need enabling and secondly, that we do want to be enabled. When we speak of the Spirit’s enabling, let us never forget we are speaking about the third person of the Holy Trinity, God the Holy Spirit. He is not simply the source of the power we need, but He is also our God whom we worship and serve. So let us ask ourselves these three questions:

1. What do we need enabling for?

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.” (Gal 5:1)

We can identify three areas that we need divine enabling in:

• Victorious living

• Fruitful service

• Effective witnessing

Do you and I truly desire these things? Can say Amen to Paul’s great prayer in Col 1:10-12?

2. How does the Holy Spirit enable us?

“Live by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.” (Gal 5:16)

But what does living by the Spirit mean? It means

• Remembering what you were called to be and what you were called for: Gal 5:13-14

• Understanding the nature of the conflict between flesh and Spirit: Gal 5:16-21

• Desiring the fruit (harvest) of the Spirit: Gal 5:22-23

3. What is the part we must play?

“Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” (Gal 5:25)

• We must understand that we have crucified the sinful nature (flesh): Gal 5:24, 26

• We need to give control over to the Holy Spirit: Gal 5:18, 25

• We need to daily walk ‘in sync’, keeping “in step with” the Holy Spirit: Gal 5:25-26

• The real issue, in the end, is who really controls our life day by day?
