Bible Passage: 2 Timothy 1: 8-12 (NKJV)

Greek words that the Apostle Paul used :

1) Ashamed: ἐπαισχύνομαι (epaischynomai)

The root words that are used to form the Greek word for “ashamed” are :

a) ἐπί preposition : upon, on, at, by, before; of position, on, at, by, over, against; to, over, on, at, across, against

b) αἰσχύνω aischynō : to disfigure ; to dishonor ; to suffuse with shame, make ashamed, be ashamed

2) Afflictions / Suffering

In this passage, the Apostle Paul used 2 words for suffering. The first word is found in 2 Timothty 1: 8 - συγκακοπαθέω (sygkakopatheō) ; and the second word for suffering πάσχω (paschō) is found in 2 Timothy 1: 12.

The word συγκακοπαθέω (sygkakopatheō) means to suffer hardship together. This Greek word is made up of 2 root words:

a) σύν (as in “syn”) : with eg synopsis

b) κακοπαθέω (kakopatheō) 1) to suffer (endure) evils (hardships, troubles); to be afflicted

The other Greek word for suffering in this passage is found in verse 12 πάσχω (paschō). This word is about being affected or have been affected and related to the feelings of a certain experience. The feeling can be of a positive one eg to be well off ; or to be a
negative one eg to suffer sadly, be in a bad plight; of a sick person

Conclusion:

Compared to external shame and suffering (συγκακοπαθέω), the affliction of paschal is internal and this paschal love of God calls us to His purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus.
