1 John 4:15-19
We have been asked to define the relationship (DTR) that we have with Jesus – are we Fan or Follower. Another way of defining this relationship, this time with respect to God is Slave or Son. That relationship is most beautifully and dramatically illustrated in the parable Jesus told that we usually called the parable of the Prodigal Son. See
Luke 15:11-32. What are the lessons we can draw from this parable?

  1. How do we see ourselves?

Imagine yourself in each character’s shoes. How did the prodigal son see himself – before he left home; before he returned home?
How did his older brother see himself – before his brother left home; when his brother returned home?

  2. How do we see others?

How did the prodigal son see his friends before and after he squandered all his money? How did his brother see him?

  3. How do we see God?

God in the story is represented by the father. How did the prodigal see his father – before he left home; before he returned home? How did the elder brother see his father – before his brother left and when his brother returned?

  1. The parable teaches us important truths about God and about our relationship with him and with one another. Which brother do you identify with best? Do you see yourself more as a servant or as son? Where do you need to change?

  2. In 1 John 4:18 John says that perfect love casts out fear. What are some of the fears we have? Where do they come from and how do they define our relationship with God? Can we be made perfect in love?

  3. In 1 John 4:19-21 we are told that love for God is also seen in love for brother. Do you think John is only talking about a blood brother? What are the implications?
